What is a sleep study and why do I need it?
The all-night Sleep Study (Polysomnography test from 9:00 p.m. to 5:30 am the next day) is a non-invasive recording of multiple body functions during sleep. The Polysomnography will record your brain wave patterns (EEG), muscle movements and movements of your eyes, the amount of oxygen, nose, mouth, and abdominal breathing, your leg movements and your heart rate in sleep. These functions are analyzed separately and in their interactions.
An overnight Sleep Study is a painless and very important test to diagnose disorders related to sleep, such as stop breathing in sleep, snoring, awakenings or difficulties falling back to sleep, heart irregularities, muscle pain, bad dreams, unusual behavior in your sleep and many others (there are 83 sleep disorders identified). A Sleep Study test is crucial in helping to develop the right treatment.
What is a CPAP Titration Study?
For patients with a confirmed diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), a CPAP Titration sleep study will be performed to calibrate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). The CPAP device is a machine with a humidifier, which produces air that flows through a fitted mask into the nose or mouth with a specified pressure. Titration means a careful and precise measurement of the necessary pressure. Currently, CPAP is the most common way to treat and manage sleep-related breathing disorders.
