Your Sleep Study Experience

Before The Study

Before a sleep study can be scheduled, a complete physical examination by your referring doctor may be required. Your insurance may require pre-authorization, and if so, Chicago Sleep Center will help. Sleep studies require an overnight stay at one of our sleep centers. Our centers offer various testing room environments from the standard room to luxury hotel rooms. We also offer sleep studies in the comfort of your own home.

What To Expect During and After

The sleep study consists of monitoring airflow from your nose and mouth, heart rate, leg movement, muscle movement, brain waves, oxygen levels, and eye movement. Electrodes will be placed on your scalp, chest, and legs by a trained sleep technician. During the sleep study no one will watch you sleep. Your sleep will be monitored by computers. The entire study is outpatient and is painless.

The study will be interpreted by a physician board-certified in sleep medicine. A full analysis will be submitted to your physician and will include any necessary information to help treat insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, snoring, etc. Your physician will advise you on all available options.

Diagnostic Testing Descriptions

Diagnostic Sleep Study

The Diagnostic Sleep Study is a test used to diagnose sleep disorders. The test records your brain waves, the oxygen level in your blood, heart rate, and breathing, as well as eye and leg movements.

CPAP Sleep Study

The CPAP Titration Sleep Study is a type of sleep study used to calibrate continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. CPAP is a common treatment used to manage sleep-related breathing disorders including obstructive sleep apnea.

Oral Appliance Sleep Study

The Oral Appliance Sleep Study is similar to a Diagnostic Sleep Study but with the addition of your oral appliance in place. The goal during this study is either to document the effectiveness of your fixed position oral appliance or, with adjustable appliances, to determine the most effective position with which to treat your sleeping disorder.

Pediatric Sleep Study (0-17 years old)

Children are subject to sleeping disorders too! Chicago Sleep Center offers special pediatric sleep studies with beds fully equipped for a painless and easy test.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test

The Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) tests for excessive daytime sleepiness by measuring how quickly you fall asleep in a quiet environment during the day. Also known as a daytime nap study, the MSLT is the standard tool used to diagnose narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.

Maintenance of Wakefulness Test

The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is used to measure how alert you are during the day. It shows whether or not you are able to stay awake for a defined period of time. This is an indicator of how well you are able to function and remain alert in quiet times of inactivity.

Unattended At-Home Sleep Study

Diagnose sleep apnea from the comfort of your own home. A home sleep test is designed to be a convenient way to collect information about your sleep. After the prescribed number of nights, the equipment is returned and the data downloaded and processed for interpretation by a sleep expert.
