Fifty to seventy million Americans experience chronic sleep disorders, while millions more are sleep deprived, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences. The study demonstrates the connection between poor sleep and a variety of problems, including poor school and job performance, obesity, hypertension, heart disease, impotence, and depression, among many others. In children, sleep disorders are often associated with Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The most common sleep disorder is Insomnia, affecting more than 30 million Americans. The second most common sleep problem is snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which affects over 6 million people. Patients with sleep apnea can suffer such mild effects as weight gain and fatigue, or such serious and long-term effects as depression, impotence, heart disease, and stroke.

Historically, only two options would be available to patients who snored or who had OSA: CPAP Therapy (a breathing machine that is strapped to the face every night) or radical surgery. Sleep labs would offer only one option: The CPAP. Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeons would only offer the other option: Surgery. Approximately ten years ago, a group of physicians with specialty training in Neurology, Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Oral Surgery, and Otolaryngology decided to create a center directed by a multi-specialty approach that would offer patients innovative as well as classic options for the treatment of snoring and OSA. These physicians developed the Sleep Diagnostic Center.

In order to correct the obstruction that is causing the snoring and apnea, more detailed testing is needed to identify the area of obstruction. Every patient is unique. The cause of their snoring is individualized, so their treatment must be individualized. The Sleep Diagnostic Center therefore created a lab that does standard testing, in addition to snore localization studies.

Historically, testing was always done in a hospital facility. As the need for sleep testing grew, many sleep labs were opened as free-standing labs. Sleep labs were even opened up in malls. Patients find it difficult to sleep in hospitals or malls. The most comfortable place to sleep is either at home, or in a Five-Star Hotel. Sleep Diagnostic Center creates a completely mobile lab that allows for home testing, or testing in seven different Chicagoland hotels with luxury accommodations. The testing analyzes the patient's level of obstruction, and allows many patients the option of minimally invasive correction procedures, such as the Pillar Palatal Implant Technique or the Radiofrequency technique.
